Image spam continues to evade filters

More warnings have been issued over the spread of image-based spam, through which pictures are used to lure victims into downloading spyware or falling for scams.

While it seems surprising, to say the least, that supposedly best-in-breed filtering software is still being bypassed by image-based emails, Computer Weekly reports that attackers are increasingly using them to beat existing controls.

Bebo has added to a big week for the online music sector with the launch of a free music uploading service .

Dubbed 'Bebo Bands', the service is being seen as a challenge to the social networking site’s rival Myspace, which has emerged as a big player in the web music space.

Monster founder launches site for oldies

Monster.com founder Jeff Taylor is set to unveil his latest web venture later today; a portal for the over 50s.

The site, eons.com, will attempt to mimic the social networking success of youth-oriented sites such as Myspace, as well as including a search engine called ‘cranky’.

Betonsports CEO fired after arrest

Web bookmaker Betonsports has sacked its chief executive David Carruthers following his high-profile arrest in Dallas last week.

The company, which faces racketeering and fraud charges in the US as part of a crackdown on web gaming firms, said it had ended Carruthers' contract and removed him as a director.

.eu authority suspends 74,000 domain names

Over 70,000 .eu domain names have been suspended by the European domain name authority after the launch of legal action against a group of 400 registrars for "abusive behaviour".

EURid said the move had been prompted by "abusive behaviour" by a syndicate of registrars who had stockpiled domain names with the obvious intent of selling them on - a practice known as 'warehousing'.

Handset ignorance presents problem for mobile industry

A new survey highlighting mobile users’ limited knowledge about their handsets will not have provided any cheer to operators or third party content providers seeking to raise interest in data services.

The study, conducted by market-research company Ipsos MORI in conjunction with LogicaCMG, found that 58% of users are oblivious to basic details of the make and model of their phones.

Spammers to get ASBOs

A Home Office proposal has called for new powers to ban suspected spammers and hackers from using the web.

The idea, contained in a new green paper, would see courts hand out the equivalent of the cyber equivalent of anti-social behaviour orders when police lack sufficient evidence of wrongdoing.

Myspace overtakes Yahoo and Google

MySpace.com has overtaken the likes of Yahoo and Google to become the most visited site in the US, according to a new survey.

Measurement firm Hitwise said MySpace.com had the most visits by US surfers in the week to July 8, thanks to a 132% rise in traffic in the previous year.
