TV leads to web as rebate hunters flock to search

Search engines saw an explosion in the number of Britons searching for Council Tax last week after a documentary showed how thousands may be elligible for a rebate.

Martyn Lewis of Moneysavingexpert.com appeared on TV to report how hundreds of users of his site's forum had claimed up to £1,000 because their homes were incorrectly banded.

That prompted an avalanche of search traffic form rate-payers Googling for more information, according to data from Hitwise.

Le Web 3: Open source reflects French election desire

A candidate in the French presidential race has proposed a social "revolution" founded on free, open source software.

Francois Bayrou, leader of the centrist Union for French Democracy (UDF), spoke of his appreciation for wikis and said he wants to create "a society based on shared culture, science and knowledge".

Tories weed out inner tosser with budget web spot

The UK's Conservative party has launched an online campaign against consumer debt, featuring an odious overspending character they dub "the inner tosser".

Created by Karmarama, the Sort-it website includes money-saving tips and a mini manifesto on fiscal responsibility. A short video features a flash, suited American encouraging an English shopper to overspend on consumer items from shoes to a sports car.

Startup Zvents.com raises $7m

US startup Zvents, a site that allows users to search for events in their local area, has announced that it has raised $7 million in venture capital.

This has raised eyebrows in E-consultancy Towers, as it is a large sum of money for a site which currently covers only a small geographical area, and has established competitors in the market, such as Eventful.com, Meetup and Upcoming

BBC could make millions from online ads

The BBC could make up to £105 million from online advertising on its BBC Worldwide web services, according to a strategy report from Accenture.

The Guardian reports that the BBC is considering bringing in ad revenue from overseas viewers of its website, though BBC staff have previously voiced their opposition to online advertising.
