Social networking site Bebo today announced the launch of several new features in the site’s internal mail system, designed to enhance users’ ability to share content among their friends while reducing spam.
The new mail system now sorts incoming messages into two inboxes – one for personal one-to-one messages, the other for messages among groups of two or more users.
Bebo Mail will now allow users to embed media in their mail by clicking a ‘send-it’ link that appears alongside videos and photos found on the site and in band pages and member profiles.
Users can also select skins for their messages, choosing their own text and background colour, as well as header and background graphics.
Bebo CEO and co-founder Michael Birch:
“In creating the new Bebo Mail, we wanted to adapt traditional email – based on one-to-one text communication – to take advantage of all the media available on Bebo and to the group communication that online social networks lend themselves so well to.”
Since its launch in July 2005, Bebo has gathered more than 28 million users, and is the largest social networking site in the UK. According to Hitwise, it may soon overtake eBay as the UK's most searched for site.
