Where do you fit into Econsultancy's membership word cloud?

Word clouds are an oft-used tool to visualise what people are talking about online, but we've decided to create a few of our own to shed some light on the various job roles taken up by our members.

Created using Wordle, this aggregates the job titles of our members from the past three years, equating to over 42,000 marketing professionals from around the world.

Here's the outcome:

Econsultancy CEO Ashley Friedlein said, "The first thing you notice is marketing, manager and director - which is an accurate reflection of our content and those attending our events or training."

What's surprising however is that online and digital aren't bigger, since you'd expect them to perhaps take the place of marketing in terms of size.

However, different companies refer job titles in so many different ways - some call it interactive, some call it digital, while others call it 'e-something'.

"We've created this based on the last three years of membership, and in the US director level isn't as senior as a VP. So if we did it just from the past year I would expect to see more US job titles pop out.

For argument's sake, we did go ahead and looked specifically at the US, which you can see in the word cloud below, with the likes of 'VP' and 'President' becoming far more prominent.

    Also surprising E Commerce doesn't figure very highly. Obviously still a minority role

    @Rob
    Bear in mind that around 70% of our members aren't 'client-side/in-house/brands'. They come from agencies, tech companies, or are students, journalists etc. There are very few job titles that come to mind in agencies which include 'e-commerce'. And I suspect the variations (ecommerce, e-commerce) would be treated as separate words making it proportionately smaller too.

    Thanks Ashley. Good point. Slightly surprised more client side digital folk not in your lists.

    I also wondered if previous research you have done about where E-commerce sits within an organisation has a bearing, e.g. withn IT as opposed to within Marketing depts.

    Great diagram tho and great way to illustate market penetration.

    Surprised "SEO" isn't higher, either.

    Also, any chance we can see full-sized versions of the images please? Would be interesting to see some of the more minor keywords but they're impossible to see as it is. Thanks :-)

    @Tim
    No mobile yet...! There are still very few people client-side, or even within agencies, with Mobile in their job titles as a % of total job titles. Also I'm seeing 'mobile' becoming the responsibility of people with broader job titles anyway (particularly within digital / marketing).

    @Sarah
    You shouldn't be surprised about the lack of web analyst - there is a real lack of them! Lots of other research we've done (some about to be published) points to the desperate need for more web analysts but there are still relatively few out there. Good news if you are one though.

    @Steve
    SEO, whilst popular, is still only one discipline among many and not that many clients yet have dedicated SEO people. On the graphic - unfortunately it was a screenshot from Wordle so that's as good a quality/size/resolution as we have.
