In the run-up to the 2004 Olympics, SiteMorse has released the results of its first report on the websites of UK sports bodies. Published in the form of league tables, the report, entitled “Website Testing and Ranking of Major Amateur Sports and Olympic Related Sites” revealed how the majority of sites were failing in their obligation to address basic disability access issues.
Top of the league and best site overall was British Paralympic Association [www.paralympics.org.uk], at the bottom of the table representing the poorest site overall was The British Weight Lifters’ Association [www.bawla.com].

Sol Saad Director commented “Whilst the BPA outperformed other sites on the whole range of tests for errors, code, response times, internal and external links, and accessibility to top the league tables; it is depressing to see how so many others have not taken action to make their sites meet even basic compliance - even in the wake of the proven international test case against website discrimination.’
HTML - Site with the lowest number of warnings [HTML standards compliance with the requirements laid down by W3C and IETF] was www.britishfencing.com with 6. www.fiba.com had the highest number of warnings, with over 131,000.
Accessibility – British Paralympic Association was the only site that scored 100%, 3 sites scored 90%+ on the automated tests looking at the requirements of Priority 1 (A) accessibility, 34 sites had 2% or less compliance when tested against the mandatory requirements for Priority 1 accessibility. 24% of sites failed on every page;
- 15 of the sites tested passed all basic speed tests, looking at first page download. Simulated as being viewed by a home [56k], ADSL [512k] and user with corporate access [1mb].
