    Hi,

I'm researching how social networking sites can help e-commerce sites, but I've come accross a couple of Qs... any one got any opinions / answers?

In the world of Natural Search Engine Optimisation and Link Building, do links placed on social networking sites help? eg if I create a persona on Facebook / Myspace / Bebo etc and add links to an e-commerce site will that be picked up by Google and considered important?

And, does it vary by network? eg as myspace is a more open network than facebook is a link from myspace more likely to be picked up?

    Cheers

I don't think facebook or bebo profiles get indexed so they won't be counted, MySpace does. I think links like these do add a small amount of weight but Google will know that they can be added by anyone so probably won't trust this as much as a regular website link.

I've found that links from business sites such as linkedin or ecademy add far more value, at least for my site anyway, mainly because the links are from a related website with relevant content.

Links from Social Networking Sites can bring some traffic though. It really depends on your market, and how you include the links. I use quite a few video sites to upload videos and photos of sports equipment in use. Each one has a credit at the end and a URL. it all helps to spread the word.

Hi, personally I can't see social networking sites adding significant value for SEO purposes. I agree with the previous response that for certain types of eCommerce sites they can be a useful source of traffic. However I've heard that traffic from Social Networking sites does not convert very well. If you are looking at using social networking as an SEO tool I think you should explore other avenues first. If you are looking for more traffic I would invest time in finding the the niche sites that might cater for your market. Hope that helps.

Today, your ranking is boosted not by the number of links but the quality of links. Quality is derived from the relevancy of the sites being linked. Therefore a link from facebook to a commercial site selling hosepipes would not add much value. A link from facebook page about a band to a site selling CD's would be far more relevant.

Business networking sites such as ecademy do provide more useful and relevant links especially if it fram a relevant blog or forum.

Placing links on social networks aren't that useful for SEOing as far as most search engines go. (We've tested with presence on over 80 SNs).

Best in the auctual site itself and words selected.

Viewmy.tv based in London develop brandstation social networks. Our brandstation platform is a collaboration platform for internal corporate communications or external marketing (open or closed sites). With versions already produced for blue-chip clients.

what i think is that the social networking sites do not crawled by the google as they are just used for the updates..and thats why placing a link in them wont give any advantage to the sitel...like facebook and the twitters are not crawled by the google....for others i dont know but these two are the mostly used social marketting sites ...
