Mobile email is becoming more important for marketers, with 88% of people checking their email via mobile on a daily basis.
Despite this, many companies have yet to adapt to this trend. Our recent Email Marketing Census found that 39% had no strategy for mobile email, while 48% were unaware how many of their emails were opened on phones.
This infographic from Return Path contains some useful stats on the use of mobile to view emails...

Interesting stats. I believe that email is a good platform for checking emails. Previously, people weren't able to check emails on the go so it is definitely convenient.
I would be interested to find out how many people use their mobile to check whether they have received any important emails predominantly, as opposed to using it to browse/read/send emails regularly. If they are using it purely for checking whether they have received any important emails, they may just delete various emails in the process without even opening them.

neat infographic. A shame you dont have any info about the behaviour in Denmark.
A fun thing about mail on phones, is that its easy to check, but difficult to respond. Therefore it would be neat to have the ability to flag important read mails, so people can be reminded to read them again and respond when they are at their normal pc.

@Laust - that is a good point about checking vs responding on mobile devices. Check out the "STARRED" functionality on Gmail, very useful for doing exactly this and something I use constantly, most often seeing an email into Gmail on my mobile first, deleting the irrelevant or non-mobile optimised ones, and starring the ones I want to read in more detail or respond to when I am next at a laptop or desktop.

Some thoughts...
The UK actually went over 50% smartphones in Q4 2011 (comScore) after your data source was published.... and ahead of the US.
I think 88% of mobile email being on an Apple device is wrong. Blackberries score high here - it's just that they are difficult to track.

Useful Stats & Nice Infographics. Google studies are also indicating similar trends & Google is pushing aggressively on Mobile Space.
We are glad that we are not in the list of organizations that don't have a "Mobile Email Strategy" nor doesn't measure their effectiveness. Though we do mobile email rendering tests for mobile devices, increasingly it is becoming challenging, with the evolution of models.Especially new models come into market quite frequently. It would be great to see an infographics on the challenges.
