Starbucks’ new mobile payment app went live in the UK today, giving users the ability to buy their coffee using an onscreen barcode.
The coffee chain’s iPhone app integrates its loyalty card, so users can manage their card balance and top-up direct from their mobiles.
Customers pay for their drink by swiping their barcode at the till.
Consumers prefer to receive promotions by text message rather than mobile web, according to new research by the Direct Marketing Association.
The study found that 38% of UK consumers prefer SMS promotions compared to just 15% that favour mobile web.
However, this is likely to be a reflection of the number of consumers who own smartphones - which currently stands at around 46% in the UK according to Ofcom.

Fans can use the Blippar app to access the club’s mobile website, team shop and ticket office.
Users can also add their face to the Southampton team huddle and share the image using email, Facebook and Twitter.
Google has started to roll out a new look, which it says will create a “simple and intuitive” user experience.
The redesign, which is only available to a limited number of users at the moment, replaces the current black strip at the top of the page with a grey logo.
