Unlike Overture, Google works out an ads position by taking into account two different criteria:
1) The amount you bid or maximum CPC and,
2) The clickthrough rate for the particular advert
Well written ads should get a higher position therefore, so even if you did know what your competitors are bidding you still need to write effective copy for your ads to get a higher position than your competitors. Google also will ensure that you don't bid a huge amount over and above your nearest competitor
There are a number of software tools out there, just type in "ppc bidding amount" into Google, but if this is a one off campaign then its not worth investing in any software.
I would suggest that you try a number of different CPC amounts. Luckily you can change the amount immediately. When you think you've reached an acceptable position then try and write more effective ad copy.
In summary therefore test, test and test again. Hope that's of help.

When I look for Adwords keywords, I get a whole list together, then run them through the traffic estimator. You can use both the google keyword tool and overture's to get the words... and then find out which words get significant clicks per day.
I put all that in excel... you can see what the top bids are. I take into account my profit margin, projected conversion rate (I tend to assume 1% at first), then figure my max bid. Once you've bid and let it run for a few days, you'll see your average position. If you can afford to go up higher, then you have that option.
However, I've found it to be as productive but more profitable to keep to positions 3-5 or so.

Can anyone recommend a decent bid mangement tool? I will be running adword and overture accounts for 4 brands with 250+ products. therfore I assume I will eventually have thousands of relevant keywords that I will need to track and report.

Bollocks...
Adwords launched in the US and the UK around 2001. Google didn't even have any employees working on it before Salar Kamangar the man responsible for Adwords and Googles financial success joined in 1999.

You only have to have a look at their website to see that they don't perhaps offer the best ppc bid mangement software. i.e I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.
