<body-formatted>E-consultancy generates a lot of its traffic from Google. We do pretty well on Google for all kinds of search terms related to the internet marketing topics we cover. Our Google visibility is certainly better overall than on Yahoo or MSN.

But does this explain why Google is our top referrer? Not entirely. Generating traffic seems to be more than simple search rankings. It is about who uses the search engines.

So who uses Google? Who uses Yahoo? MSN? AOL? There is an assumption that techies use Google to search. Our users are tech-savvy, but is this assumption accurate?

And if it is accurate, then can it be extended more broadly, to B2B?

There is clearly a need for some research in this area. Maybe we'll do a survey on this (nudge us if we don't).

In the meantime, some light reading on this theme...

Jeremy Zawodny has, despite being in the employ of Yahoo, shone a light on this very subject by revealing his referrer data and finding in favour of Google. The comments from his readers are equally revealing, if a little scattershot. Interesting to see the variations between different kinds of websites.

He also posted additional search engine referral analysis of which of the search engines generates the most advertising revenue for Jeremy, finding that MSN users are the most lucrative.
