I am puzzled. we have a high ranking on Google - either no. 1 or 2 - for our basic key words but a very low ranking on Yahoo - about no. 35 or 40.
What does each search engine look at to arrive at its rankings?

That's the question that thousands of SEO professionals ask themselves every day!
You should be asking yourself if it's worth jeopardizing your excellent Google ranking in pursuit of results on Yahoo! Given the latter's significantly smaller reach you may want to spend time on other initiatives.

Thanks - do you reckon its one r the other then? If so, I will probably go pay per click on Yahoo & see results.

I would say that you can probably get good resutls for both.
But I don't think it's worth the risk -- what if your Google ranking falls to the second page?
Perhaps there are ways to experiment with Yahoo! without risking your Google ranking. But how much will it cost?
PPC is definiely an option. Yahoo's reach goes beyond their own search.

We always aim to get good rankings for our customers in all search engines and achieve a good balance instead of focusing only on Google. You will be suprised how many customers actually come from other routes and search engines.
Take Arianna in Italy for instance.... Sina in China.... many quality customers but not from Google. I think a good balance is the best way to go...
