Like.com image search engine lauched by Riya

A new kind of image search is being launched today by Riya, which will allow users to search for images using both text and images as queries.

Other image searches rely on text queries, which depend on the data attached to the image file. This is not necessarily a reliable way to search, which is where Like.com comes in.

And boy, the technology is stunning...

Interview with Martin Stiksel of last.fm

Last.fm has become one of my very favourite web apps – it helps me find new music and figure out what I've been listening to most (Cocteau Twins, for the record).

I recently hooked up with Martin Stiksel, one of the company's founders, in last.fm's new offices near Old Street in London, to discuss progress to date and to find out more about the service.

Online shopping growth driven by men

Men who can’t be bothered to go out shopping are helping to drive rapid growth in online retailing, according to a survey by the British Council of Shopping Centres.

FT.com reports that men have a ‘hunter’ approach to shopping – they know what they want and want to get it as quickly and painlessly as possible. Online shopping is the perfect way for them to do this.

Google's Adam Lasnik interviewed by Lee Odden

Adam Lasnik describes himself as Google’s first ‘search evangelist’, and he works to improve relations between the search engine and webmasters.

Adam's job is to help webmasters with ranking and indexing issues either through communication or other means. In an interview by Lee Odden from MarketingBlog.com, Adam talks about search engine marketing and has some tips for webmasters.

Being on BBC's Watchdog - how much traffic does prime time TV drive to your site?

Yesterday evening I appeared on BBC's prime time TV show Watchdog to talk about an eBay story. During the show they displayed our site's URL on screen.

So I was intrigued to see this morning how much traffic that might have created to our site...

Xbox gears up for online video downloads

Owners of Microsoft’s Xbox 360 will soon be able to watch and download a range of movies and TV shows through their consoles.

Microsoft has announced that it plans to rival Apple by renting and selling downloaded movies and TV shows through Xbox Live, though the video service may well be more about the console wars with Sony's PS3 and Nintendo's Wii.

Blog growth dips as Technorati tackles splog problem

Technorati’s latest State of the Blogosphere report shows continuing growth in the number of active blogs, with over 57 million blogs currently being tracked.

However, growth in blog numbers has slowed slightly since the last quarter, something Technorati put down to more effective measures at limiting the number of spam blogs (aka 'splogs') listed. This is a good thing.

Amazon's CEO wants to help you run your business, using the same technologies and operations that power Amazon.com.

In a great interview with Business Week, Jeff Bezos talks about the new services Amazon is offering to third party developers, providing computing power with its Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, and its hosted storage service, Amazon S3.
