    Hi,

I've noticed my website www.chuanspa.co.uk is also shown in Google as a separate site under www.chuanspa.com/en/London/index.html

All promos & advertising contain the .co.uk url, but I think the original url is the .com.

Has my agency just set up the .co.uk as a mask and if so not sure what to do as we promote the .co.uk everywhere?

    Any recommendations greatly appreciated.

    many thanks
    Becky

    Hi Becky

I've just had a look at the domain records on those two.

    CO.UK redirects to

    www.chuanspa.co.uk.edgesuite.net

    while COM redirects to

    ccdn.langham.edgesuite.net

These are both CNAMES - which means they're a kind of invisible redirect, the user still sees the .com or .co.uk domain in the browser.

I'm not able to see if any further redirection happens, but because they both have different domain names, they are (correctly) treated as separate sites by Google.

I'm not an SEO expert, but I think most would say that by having two domains you're halving your influence and should aim to have one consistent domain for both.

    Google have some advice here:

I hope this helps a little.

    Becky,

It looks like you have made some progress since your original post. The couple of things I can see which could do with correction are:

    1. Both your domains (.co.uk & .com) redirect twice. The fist goes from the root domain ie. www.chuanspa.co.uk to www.chuanspa.co.uk/en/London.
That URL then redirects to www.chuanspa.co.uk/en/London/.

Note the trailing forward slash on the last URL. The first redirect should really redirect straight to the last one to avoid the double redirect. It won't help your sites experience as the clients browser can't load the last page until it's done 2 round trips to get the proper destination.

Looking at this in firebug suggests it was just over 1 second before my browser even started to retrieve the right file.

    2. Both domains are still active and thus are giving rise to duplicate content. I can't actually see the URL's that Will has referenced above but from them it looks like you're using Akamai's content delivery network. What I can see is that I can access the same page from both www.chuanspa.com/en/London/ & www.chuanspa.co.uk/en/London/. I also notice that www.chuanspa.com/en/London/index.html is also in Google's index which is the same again.

There are no doubt a number of ways you could deal with this. The simplest in my opinion would be to simply use 1 domain (.com) and 301 redirect the .co.uk to the appropriate page on the .com. I note that you have the same issue on the .com.au duplicating content with www.chuanspa.com/en/Melbourne/. Duplicate content is never a good thing :-)

    Best of luck! Pete

Thanks a lot Pete, my agency are now going to apply a 301 redirect as suggested. Really appreciate the help.
