Having read through the best practice guide to SEO from econsultancy i came across an interesting point on Keyphrase platform targetting.
" One technique to decide which keyphrases to target with SEO is to use a search volume threshold. Phrases that are above this threshold warrant work on SEO. Where this threshold is fixed will depend on the demand for products and budget available, but here are some examples:
Use SEO for phrases above a set PPC monthly spend per keyphrase, e.g. £10, £50, £100.
Use PPC for phrases above a set demand volume per keyphrase, e.g. 1,000, 10,000, 50,000. "
I wondered if anyone uses this technique regularly and can recommend it ?

This concept wrks around finite budgets. For examle, If the head of a keyword "blue widgets" has many many variations and traffic, you could resort to PPC to cature all.
On the other had, there are posts of keywords that have their own traffic, which costs an £X of money a month without fail, so e.g "Blue Widgets reveiwed" and "blue widgets special offers". If both of these have a set monthly spend, you could try and use SEO to target them, as ranking for the longer tail would be easier.
Running through several such variations and crafting a stratgy that captures all these variations culd mean that you could extract them from PPC, leaving more budget for the top "head" terms.
I have used this technique, and used it often to manage large and small budgets...
