Currently looking around and would be greatful for any advice. It appears that MAgento and other operators kike Venda are the most common.
However we sell expensive content, and we want that content to be curate-able by the user. We don't want a traditional "retail" approach.
Anybody have any names to reccomend? They would have to have at least some history of working with large, professional organisations with an established site and customer base.

Interesting question. We (Econsultancy) have toyed with the idea, over many years, of creating a new business which licenses our own technology platform. We're a B2B publisher with a similar model to your own and when we've looked at platforms over the years we've never found anything that does what we need - either too much focused on content management and not enough e-commerce capability for content sales OR too e-commerce focused (merchandising/stock/inventory/pricing/offers...) with not enough content/profiling type functionality. So we've built and refined our own platform over the last 10 years.
We've decided against licensing our platform (for the moment) as we're still busy developing it for ourselves (e.g. elearning, globalisation/localisation, mobile version etc.). I haven't recently re-looked into the platforms out there but we could do it for you as a piece of research/consultancy if of interest.

We have done similar projects in the publishing sector, most recently www.treasurytoday.com. Subscribers get gated access to content (articles, reports, etc) at different service levels and can store, aggregate and download content in their own "take-home" collections. oh, and all the subscribers are managed within a CRM (in this case MS Dynamics CRM).

In my opinion, Drupal is so powerful enough to produce exactly what you want. I have been working with Drupal for more than 5yrs today and its feature is simply amazing.

Drupal is an amazing CMS tool. One order thing I like about Drupal is that; It is very easy to learn if you are a newbie.

I agree with Stanley, Drupal would be a perfect fit for your requirement. Magento is a great ecommerce platform but your need points to a system which is based on collaboration and community. Drupal is such a tool. With over 7000 free extensions and a powerful ecommerce solution it is certainly capable of delivering what you describe.
Combine Drupal with our Copernica software which is an eCRM system and you have a powerful business tool. Copernica is capable of running automated email/sms/fax messaging based on user actions/state. For example if someone registers and does not buy, you can have it send them an email bestowing the virtues of your business to persuade them to complete a purchase. Many similar campaigns can be designed and run in background, maximising your ROI.
