    Hi all,

The last time I rented an email list was back in 2008, and I vowed never to do it again, and since then there has definitely been a huge bias in the industry towards the NEVER DO IT! camp, and I'm certainly aware of all the reasons why you wouldn't.

I was just wondering whether anyone knows whether the opinion about renting or buying "targeted", "relevant" email lists has changed in the e-comm industry? Are people still viewing this activity as a "never go there" thing?

We have spoken to a few suppliers in this space who are giving us the line that things have really changed in the past few years, and renting and buying is not the dirty word it used to be, but I was wondering whether anyone has any experience or best practice advice on this that is up to date from a "user" point of view.

    Thanks,
    Gareth

    Hi Gareth,

Just thought I'd share my thoughts on this, we tend to buy circa 10k records pcm on behalf our clients and many of the email brokers still talk about the changes and reliability of the email lists - from our experience we've found that the only way to really get a "good" i.e. 80%+ email list is to build it ourselves.

The biggest challenge that we've found is the opt in laws and priviledge consent, although we do this for clients it involves a call directly to to prospect to ask their permission, if the prospective solution is below a certain value threshold this can be a real challenge to gathering good email data cost effectively.

    I hope this helps :)

    Helen
