The UK Affiliate Census 2009, which is backed by Affiliates4U and the leading affiliate networks, is the most detailed study available about the make-up of the affiliate community.
The study, carried out in association with Affiliate Window, is essential reading for those who want to know more about affiliates, including how much revenue they are generating, how they are getting their traffic and which linking methods they are using.
The 60-page report, based on a survey of more than 1,000 affiliates, looks in detail at the nature and quality of relationships affiliates have with networks and merchants.
Many of the key findings are broken down by 'full-time' and 'part-time' affiliates, and this year's data is compared with the findings from the inaugural Affiliate Census from Econsultancy and AffiliateProgramAdvice.com published in 2007.
The ongoing aim of the Affiliate Census is to shed more light on an industry which drives billions of pounds in online sales annually.
Highlights from the findings include:
-) The majority of affiliates (55%) see the economic crisis as an opportunity compared to less than a third (30%) who regard it as a threat.
-) Affiliates are spread across a range of categories including true content, paid search, price comparison, blogs and forums, email marketing, voucher codes and cash-back or rewards. The most important method of affiliate marketing is true content, which more than a third of affiliates (36%) cite as their top category for generating revenue.
-) Forty per cent of respondents have joined the industry since the first Affiliate Census was published in 2007. Just under a quarter of responding affiliates first got involved in 2008.
-) The vast majority of affiliates (70%) have limited communication (33%), indirect communication (27%) or no communication with merchants (10%).
