Hi all,
Thanks for all the comments - it seems like it is worth clarifying exactly what 3 way link techniques are used before I can establish whether this is good practice or not.
Please keep the comments coming - they are really helpful!

Hi
Can someone please explain the difference between link farms and 3 way linking - are these the same or different?
Thanks

In answer to your question 3 Way Linking is when somebody links to you from one of their sites and in turn you link to their main site they are trying to promote. A Link Farm is a group of websites that all hyperlink between each and every other site within the group or network. The ethical process of building links should not be confused with being listed on unethical link farms, as the latter requires reciprocal return links, which often means the backlink is greatly devalued. This is because the search engines know its an arranged 2 way relationship. We offer professional and award winning link building services, so please get in touch if we can help. Rob Arkell.

Don't even go there. I am surprised people are still having this conversation. Google is quite clear that if you are trying to "game" search results then the links will not be valued. Create good engaging content and people will link to it.
Answer; BAD

Bad, reciprocal links are devalued and link farms are banned so three way links have potentially the worst of both worlds. Better to use ethical link building services - top quality directory and article submissions in particular.
