Analysis of Australian e-commerce statistics [Infographic]

E-commerce in Australia is a complex, fragmented landscape and one that’s a hot topic in the marketplace - constantly being at the forefront of discussions within the digital industry and wider public sphere

Recently, competitions.com.au created a catchy infographic that considers the current e-commerce environment in the region.

With online sales in Australia suggested to be worth some $37bn dollars by 2013, this is an impressive growth expectation, considering that the population is around only 22.5m people.

It’s not to say that it’s unrealistic though, as there’s a clear appetite among consumer for shopping online – especially with the increase of different transactional touchpoints, such as those found within social and mobile channels

As our State of Digital Australia report revealed, both retailers and marketers who are still behind the curve in adopting and creating an online retailing strategy are likely to be left behind in the wake of those who embrace the opportunities being presented by e-commerce.

Great infographic - it would be interesting to see comparisons of ecommerce spend per head or some such metric with other countries.

In my personal view, Its amazing that the top 10 on line retailers in this article are the same groups that are protesting about on line sales affecting and creating loss in their retail business and want it stopped. In reality the top ten nominated are retail outlets who have a web presence but do not capture the business as you can buy cheaper else ware on line

Would also be interesting to see how many Australians use the Internet to research and compare services that are ultimately purchased offline.

@Will - Yes, agree, although everyone seems to have a different idea of what the reality of spend in Australia currently is. I've seen varying figures for identical periods - $143bn (ACMA), $19bn (Forrester), $50bn (Deloitte) - so spend per head would also be inconsistent. That said, all these figures indicate that it's slightly higher than more mature markets, which reflects the rapid adoption / growth rate that undeniably exists.

@RobC - I think you might be wrong? While there are some Australian retailers being negatively vocal about digital, the top ten list of retailers in this infographic are a mix of multichannel and pure-play. I doubt the latter are protesting about online sales... ;-)

@ZoeCat - Funnily enough, Econsultancy has some research in pipeline about this. Watch this space - due to be published shortly!

25% pay with credit cards yet most sites only offer that option. How about the rest that don't have or choose to use a credit card?
