A bill has been introduced in the US Congress which aims to legalise online betting run by licensed operators.
Democrat Barney Frank yesterday introduced the Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act 2007, though he will face quite a struggle to get the bill through Congress.
The US' online gambling ban, according to Frank, is...
"an inappropriate interference on the personal freedom of Americans and this interference should be undone.”
The congressman's proposal would allow online gambling firms to do business with gamblers in the US, provided that they introduce measures to prevent children and gambling addicts from using their sites.
Betting would be taxed under the new law, raising an estimated $20bn for the US treasury over the next five years.
However, the Democratic leadership, with presidential elections coming next year, is unlikely to support the bill, so the chances of its success may be very slim indeed.

Many states in the union have state lotteries. Would someone please explain to me the difference between little old ladies playing the lottery and my playing poker online?? How can one be considered gambling while the other is not? Bush is an idiot!!!
