We've heard from Google, YouTube and eBay, even Facebook a few weeks back, but now it's the turn of AddThis to reveal its 'most shared' social networks, devices and topics.
Probably the best known of the 'sharing button' services, AddThis' infographic is based on over 11m downloads, 1.2bn users and spans 350 different services.
The company says that Facebook makes up a massive 52.1% of AddThis sharing on the web, with Twitter under a third of that at 13.5%. Interestingly, Tumblr sharing has grown by 1299.5% and is still accelerating.
IE is still producing the most shares by browser, but Chrome is quickly catching up, surpassing Firefox back in November.
28% of all shares on AddThis for 2011 were related to the death of Osama Bin Laden, following by the US East Coast Earthquake, Royal Wedding and Hurricane Irene.

What more can Google do? I think most people are just so familiar with Facebook and all their friends are on Facebook so why switch? The experience is not as good without your friends regardless of the clever tools. Also, it is a hassle to keep up with 2 social networks rather than 1 and Facebook is a must have for all social people. In a way i am glad that Google are struggling on this one, wouldn't be right if they dominated social too.

Joel, my thoughts exactly. They're very aggressively trying to beat Facebook at its own game... they failed miserably so far. And yes, with Google Plus it's a service that's a bit better than the past tries however why would anyone bother with G+ if they already have Fb and all their friends are there? And many applications, games, features, etc. I hope Fb will bring its search engine to the party soon because this Google-dominates-everything world is starting to get annoying :-/

I agree with you Joel/Mark that Google+ will struggle to persuade people to move away from other social networks. However, I think if it accepted that and positioned it as a close circle networking/collaboration tool, it might find more love. Google+ provides a useful way of creating targeted circles of 'friends' with whom you have a common goal. It can be more direct in exchanging information without the need to create and manage a separate FB page. I'm seeing a few people in the UK e-commerce industry using Google+ to share content, much in the same way we all do via Twitter.
I think the UX of Google+ is better than the Twitter-based tools like Hootsuite/Tweetdeck for managing lists. Whether or not people can be bothered to migrate specific conversations and groups onto the + network remains to be seen but I wouldn't be surprised if they get some wins there. Plus not everyone loves FB and Zuckerberg and the games/apps/features overload.

James, what if Fb comes out with "ellipses" ;-) that you can add your friends to / manage lists better, etc. I mean all the great things about G+ can be easily integrated into Fb with a simple feature update, what then? (I'm not pro or contra either of them, okay to be honest I like the simplicity of Google+ better myself, I'm just curious.)

Yes that's a fair point and FB would have a big advantage given the zillions of members. i just think that there is still a decent number of people (don't ask me to quantify that throw away statement!) who find FB a bit annoying. The Luddites are still alive. I think I've got split personality because when I'm away or travelling, I find FB really useful but when I'm home I never log-in.
Let's see what 2012 brings...
