Google is testing a version of AdSense that includes YouTube video ads, hinting at the next step in the search giant's efforts to monetise the $1.65bn video network.
A new Flash-based 300x250 AdSense unit includes text links as well as a 250x200 embedded YouTube video. The test ad is "Gmail Theatre" - a low-budget video spot that is hosted on YouTube and trails Google's own email service, which dropped its invite-only barrier last month.

The speed with which Google was able to earn revenue from pay-per-click ads was "a wake-up call within Microsoft", according to the company's CTO, Ray Ozzie.
Microsoft trails Google and Yahoo! in the web advertising market, with the Redmond-based desktop software maker seen as playing catch-up in web innovations.

Apple has been forced to roll back shipment of its Apple TV media bridge device by nearly a month.
Reuters in the US last night quoted a spokeswoman as saying: "Wrapping up Apple TV is taking a few weeks longer than we projected, and we now expect to begin shipments mid-March."

Social news bookmarking site Digg will adopt the increasingly popular OpenID passwords framework amongst a raft of new features.
Founder Kevin Rose announced at the Future of Web Apps (FoWA) conference in London yesterday that similar announcements this year from Microsoft, Yahoo! and AOL had hastened the site's move.

A Texan inventor has launched an audacious court case against TV-shifting hardware maker Sling Media, claiming a patent infringement.
Stuart Mershon claims the Slingbox, which uses the internet to rebroadcast TV content from a user's lounge to a PC or mobile phone anywhere in the world, infringes on a system he invented to transmit home audio signals to a remote speaker over wireless telephone networks.

Amid growing consumer demand for platform-neutral digital music without cumbersome copy protection, Apple CEO Steve Jobs has fired the digital rights management (DRM) ball firmly into the record labels' court.
In a surprise open letter, titled "Thoughts on Music" and published on apple.com last night, Jobs wrote:-
"The third alternative is to abolish DRMs entirely. Imagine a world where every online store sells DRM-free music encoded in open licensable formats. In such a world, any player can play music purchased from any store, and any store can sell music which is playable on all players.

PayPerPost, the company that caused controversy by paying bloggers to write about clients' products, is to roll out the same model in the video blogging arena.
Advertisers in the network's client base will next week begin paying bloggers to create videos about their goods, according to a report.
They will also get to place their own messages at the start or end of clips, ensuring a positive message even if the blogger offers a bad product review.

US advertisers aim to up their online ad spend by 18% this year, and the bulk will go toward search engine advertising, according to a new report.
Data from Outsell shows online will outstrip a general 5.8% growth in ad spending across all media in 2007 - what it called a "major milestone" for the web.

A video purporting to show users how to become a tester for a forthcoming TV service to be launched by Google has split the web over claims it is a hoax.
A clip posted to YouTube by tech tutorial channel Infinite Solutions on Friday told viewers they could access high-quality US network TV shows as part of a private test by repeatedly logging in and out of Gmail.
