Microsoft is expected to publicly criticise rival Google's "cavalier" approach to copyright in a speech to the publishing industry today.
According to an advance copy of an address due to be delivered by associate general counsel Thomas Rubin to the American Association of Publishers, and obtained by the Financial Times, Rubin will say: "Companies that create no content of their own, and make money solely on the backs of other people's content, are raking in billions through advertising revenue and IPOs.

The speed with which Google was able to earn revenue from pay-per-click ads was "a wake-up call within Microsoft", according to the company's CTO, Ray Ozzie.
Microsoft trails Google and Yahoo! in the web advertising market, with the Redmond-based desktop software maker seen as playing catch-up in web innovations.

With a view to halting the plethora of copyright cases and complaints brought against YouTube, Google will soon offer anti-piracy technology for copyright holders to prevent their content being shown on the site.
Google has been heavily criticised for seeming to be willing to take action over copyright infringement only when they have an existing content agreement with the content owners.

A new study carried out by Adams Media Research predicts that fees generated by downloads of TV and movies will exceed that from adverts on free programming.
The US study predicts that advertisers will spend $1.7bn (£871m) on internet video streams to PCs and TVs, while movie and TV downloads will generate consumer spending of $4.1 bn (£2.1bn) by 2011.

Social news bookmarking site Digg will adopt the increasingly popular OpenID passwords framework amongst a raft of new features.
Founder Kevin Rose announced at the Future of Web Apps (FoWA) conference in London yesterday that similar announcements this year from Microsoft, Yahoo! and AOL had hastened the site's move.

Google has expanded its empire into the in-game ad market, with the acquisition of Adscape for $23m (£11.8m).
Adscape's technology allows advertisers to place ads within games, as well as giving marketers the ability to measure ad performance.

Spending by North American advertisers on search rose 62% to $9.4bn last year, according to new figures from the
Search Engine Marketing Professional Organisation (SEMPO)
.
The group estimates that SEM spending – including paid placement, paid inclusion, SEO and the purchase of technology platforms - will double by 2011, at an aggregate spending total of $18.6bn.

Microsoft has reportedly earmarked $500m for a massive global advertising campaign to support the launch of its new Vista operating system.
In what will be its "most aggressive launch ever", Advertising Age said the Redmond, Washington, giant is launching a campaign across 20 countries that aims for "6.6bn impressions in its first few months".
