When mobile or tablet design is executed well, the device feels like the extension of our bodies. Because interfaces respond even before we consciously give them a command.
Often, the interface “dissolves in behavior” and we feel empowered, as though the device we hold in our hand is the equivalent of Iron Man’s suit of cybernetic armor, or Batman’s utility belt.
I call this empowering experience a “Magic Moment”.
Most importantly, these “Magic Moments” make people fall in love with your app, show it to their friends, telling, nay, insisting they download the app and experience the magic for themselves. These are the moments we designers live for.
And mobile and tablet devices are more suited to creating and fostering “magic moments” than any other device.
China is now responsible for over a half a billion web users (greater than the total population of the EU), following a short period of tremendous growth.

Yesterday US retailer Sephora completed a ‘digital makeover’, which has over the past few months included the launch of a new website, mobile site, an iPhone app, plus the introduction of iPads (to look up products) and the iPod Touch (to help customers check out) to many of its stores.
So far, the iPhone app has been downloaded 2m times, and the retailer says that shopping from mobile devices grew by 300% last year.
The make-up and pharmaceutical company has also fully integrated with Pinterest, so that users can “pin” any of the 14,000 products on Sephora.com to their own boards.
Since as much as 50% of smartphone users use their phones instore today, mobile on the high street is clearly going to be a key element of retailers’ success or failure over the next five years.
