Many internet radio services will go silent today in protest at plans to increase royalty fees paid by web broadcasters.
Many US web broadcasters have protested that the royalty hikes, which will be backdated to January 2006, will put them out of business, as well as reducing the choice availble for listeners.

Music download website We7 has struck a deal with indie record label V2 to provide content for its service.
V2 will make its back catalogue available for download on We7, including music from Bloc Party, Stereophonics and others. The label will also make tracks from new artists available on the site.

MyStrands, a music recommendation site based in Spain, has announced that it has received $25m (£12.5m) in second round funding.
This round was led by 25 year-old Spanish media mogul Antonio Asensio, who owns Grupo Zeta, the third largest media group in Spain, and brings the total funding raised by MyStrands to $31m (£15.6m).

Music Station, a new service offering all-you-can-eat music downloads to mobiles, is reportedly planning to launch in the UK in October.
The Independent says Omnifone, Music Station’s owner, is in talks with Carphone Warehouse over a deal to preload the service onto new handsets.

Apple is looking to tap into social networking sites as an e-commerce channel after striking a deal to distribute music with Bebo.
From today, Apple’s iTunes service will be embedded into the Bebo website – allowing its users to buy music from artists that have a Bebo profile and whose music is available via iTunes.

Not content with a huge windfall from the sale of filtering company SurfControl, Steve Purdham has linked up with former Genesis frontman Peter Gabriel to launch a new music downloading venture.
We7, as it is called, allows fans to download music for free, as long as they are prepared to listen to 10-second ads attached to each song. The tracks then become ad-free after four weeks.
We caught up with Steve to ask about his plans for the service, and what interest he has managed to generate from labels and advertisers.

Silicon Valley startup Lala.com has just gone live with an alternative plan to encourage music downloads.
It is offering free, on-demand streamed music through its site in the hope that enough users will buy CDs and download tracks to make it profitable.

Slacker, a recently launched web radio service, has raised $40m (£20m) in a second round of funding, to add to the $14.5m (£7.3m) raised in a Series A round of funding earlier this year.
According to peHUB, Centennial Ventures and Rho Ventures were new investors, while Austin Ventures, Mission Ventures and Sevin Rosen Funds, which had participated in the first round, invested again.
And it turns out that Slacker has some serious non-web ambitions...

EMI has concluded a content deal with YouTube to show its vast catalogue of music videos and performances on the video site.
EMI, the third largest record label, follows the other three big guns, Sony, BMG and Universal in allowing YouTube to show their artists' videos.

Web radio service Last.fm has been snapped up by CBS in a $280m (£142m) deal, which is the largest ever UK Web 2.0 acquisition.
The move follows ongoing rumours that Last.fm would be acquired, but Viacom was believed to have been the likely buyer, and at a much higher price of $450m (£226m).
