In the past few weeks a number of people have asked me about the key characteristics of a good writer. How has this changed in recent years? What do we want to see when hiring writers?
I thought I’d outline my views in a handy cut-out-and-keep list. I’ve probably forgotten a few things but I hope you’ll be able to see where we’re coming from...

Email
is a bit of a special medium. Most people have got an email address that is
unique to them, which makes it more in common with a mobile phone number than a
postal address.

email address is individual (most of the time) and it can be linked closely to
the customer lifecycle using response data alongside RFM data.
This lifecycle
can be tracked, measured, anticipated and managed. Here are some ideas on how

Many small businesses are trapped. They know their companies could grow by marketing online more effectively but they do not have a big enough annual budget to get an agency to work for them.

Earlier today I wanted to locate a tweet from 13 October 2010. I happened to know the date, but not the precise Twitter URL of the tweet in question. It turns out that it is pretty much impossible to search for date-specific tweets on Twitter itself.
So I asked the question on Twitter and once again the glorious hive came to the rescue. All manner of wonderful workarounds and suggestions were fired back at me. Some worked, others didn’t, but within 10 minutes I’d found the random tweet I was looking for (despite throwing a few curveballs along the way).
Many of us are now fairly advanced Twitter users with our own personalised Tweetdeck or Hootsuite set ups, and our Twitpic and Yfrog accounts, but there are lots of other tools out there that can help us to enhance and optimise our Twitter experience. I thought I’d share a few of them with you...

For those of you who missed it (and with 20,000 people registering for it I’m not sure who that may be) Hubspot’s Dan Zarrella’s “The Science of Email Marketing” was a reminder that testing and optimization are a core best practice which will ultimately drive the success of any email initiative.
Not that the webinar was focused on testing. Instead, takeaways were presented with the caveat “this may or may not be the case for you” ... which is another way of saying “test it and see what happens.”

We recently noticed that our online press centre is in need of some serious love and attention, as a number of basic features are missing. With this in mind I thought I’d compile a post that we can use internally to make some improvements.
There are a surprising amount of ‘basics’ that I think are key components of any online press centre.
Some of my points aren’t going to apply to all companies, and others aren’t strictly necessary, but as a rule – and speaking from the perspective of a former journalist - I’d say around a dozen of the following points are essential.
