Google is apparently looking to tap into the Facebook widget ‘phenomenon’ by serving Adsense ads on third-party applications created for the site.
Steve Rubel has linked to an article in AdAge that quotes Google CEO Eric Schmidt as saying:
“How will those developers get paid for those services? We would like to have our ads in those applications.”

Facebook has opened up its application directory so that search engines can index third-party services created for the site and what users say about them.
The move should provide developers of Facebook apps with more visibilty and a wider audience.

MySpace will be launching a platform for outside application developers in the 'next couple of months', according to Rupert Murdoch and MySpace chief executive Chris DeWolfe.
As predicted, Murdoch announced the plans during the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco yesterday, saying MySpace would begin by offering a directory of widgets that have been created for the site.

LinkedIn will open up to application developers but in a much more limited way than its rival Facebook, according to CEO Dan Nye.
The business-focused social network announced plans to create an open platform for developers earlier this year, but Nye said LinkedIn wanted to avoid some of the more frivolous applications that have been created through Facebook's API.

MySpace is reportedly set to follow Facebook's lead and launch an API - a move that will have have third party application developers licking their lips in anticipation.
The News Corp-owned site, which will have noted the popularity of Facebook's decision to launch a range of tools for developers back in May, is apparently planning to announce its reposte at the Web 2.0 conference in San Francisco next week.

Online fashion and lifestyle publisher Glam Media has launched a number of new features and widgets to make its network of blogs and websites easier to navigate.
Glam's platform is designed to distribute media content across its network of more than 400 sites and partners, with the aim of increasing the network's traffic and page views.

Google today launched Gadget Ads, a new interactive rich media ad format which will allow advertisers to measure users' responses to the ads, as well as updating ad content in real time.
The new ads designed for use across Google's network of sites, and aims to offer a way for internet users to interact with ad content in a way that is not possible with standard web ads.
