Amazon has launched a range of widgets in a bid to boost the reach of its affiliate marketing programme.
The widgets can be used to display the etailer's products on blogs, social networks and other websites, earning members of the company's Associates programme up to 10% in referral fees.

Photo widget company RockYou has partnered with visual shopping and image search site Like.com to find clothes that are similar to those worn in its photo slideshows.
Like.com, launched at the end of last year, uses image search technology to find bags, clothes and shoes that are similar to those shown in images. If, for instance, you enter a picture of a bag, Like.com will return similar images with prices and details from online retailers.

Travel review site TripAdvisor has acquired Where I've Been, a Facebook app build by an independent developer, for $3m (£1.5m) - the biggest deal yet for a Facebook widget.
The app lets Facebook users add a map of the world to their profile pages, to show which countries they have visited. More than 2.3m people have signed up for the widget.

Thousands of applications have been created on Facebook’s open platform since the social network opened up to developers earlier this year. But launching one, and generating interest, is not necessarily easy.
‘Attitudinal matching’ company Synature is one UK firm that has already taken the plunge, launching a version of its qubox software that allows Facebook members to search for like-minded people on the site, as well as potentially becoming a platform for targeted advertising. Here, John Woods, its CEO, talks about the challenges the company faced, and why he thinks the API can be a significant opportunity for brands.

Internet ratings site Quantcast has provided more evidence of what it calls the 'Facebook effect', with stats showing that Facebook widgets are helping to boost traffic to sites that have produced widgets for the social network.
Quantcast reports (via VentureBeat) that some widget producers' sites have seen dramatic increases in traffic for three of the most popular widgets on Facebook, HotorNot, Slide and RockYou.

US venture capital firm Bay Partners has launched AppFactory, a program that will invest in developers creating applications for the Facebook platform.
The FT reports that Bay Partners is looking to make up to 50 investments of between $25,000 to $250,000 (£12,000 to £120,000) to help developers build Facebook applications.

Scott Switzer is the co-founder of open source ad serving company OpenAds. Launched several years ago as the tech arm of Unanimis, it has long been billed as a threat to online ad networks by giving publishers more power to pick the ads they display. Twenty five thousand of them are now using the site.
Here, Scott talks about OpenAds’ upcoming move into new formats, as well as its recent funding by a group of well-known VCs.

Google has launched a pilot programme that will provide funding to developers using its gadget API to develop their own applications.
Under the scheme, developers can apply for a grant if their app is in Google's gadgets directory and has at least 250,000 weekly page views.

Hitwise UK has some interesting figures showing how effective widgets can be in driving traffic to websites from social networks.
Slide.com and RockYou, two providers of photo-sharing widgets, have moved rapidly up the rankings in the photography websites category, according to Heather Hopkins.
