These are currently drastically under-exploited - indeed, local mobile search is where the real value of mobile search lies, i.e. search in relation to your physical location.

Google has been looking into web-based malware and has come up with some worrying figures. Of the 4.5m web pages it looked at in depth, 450,000 were capable of downloading malicious code without the user's knowledge.
A further 700,000 web pages in Google's study contained code which could potentially compromise a user's computer.

Official complaints about internet ads rose by a third in 2006, according to new figures from the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).
The agency reported 2,066 complaints - up from 1,577 and even more than direct mail attracted - according to the ASA's annual report.

British advertisers are using eyetracking technology more commonly used on the internet to monitor who views outdoor billboards.
The eyeBox2, developed at Queen's University in Ontario, includes a camera that can monitor viewers' eye movements at up to 35 feet away.

The audience for online newspaper sites in the US is growing at twice the rate of the overall web audience, according to new figures.
The Nielson//NetRatings report, released by the Newspaper Association of America (NAA), also suggests that visitors to these sites have higher incomes, as well as being more inclined to shop online.

Online loyalty programme iPoints has linked up with voucher company Couponstar to provide its members with money off coupons on a range of FMCG products.
The scheme will use Couponstar's printable voucher technology to drive offline sales for a range of brands, including Colgate and Ocean Spray.

Blog search engine Technorati has added a new feature that ranks blogs by 'authority', replacing earlier references to how many inbound links a blog has generated.
A blog's 'authority' is now determined by the number of sites linking to it, rather than the overall number of links, with better scores for link-love from higher-placed blogs.

eBay drop shop brand Auctioning4u has bought the assets of iSold It UK, a rival chain that went into administration last month.
The move will see iSold It UK's shops moving over to the Auctioning4u network, boosting the company's plan to increase the number of its drop off locations around the UK.
