About Me
Russell is Director of eCommerce for Thomas Cook UK & Ireland, a position he has held since Thomas Cook’s merger with MyTravel in June 2007. He is recognised as a top 100 individual for contribution to the development of the internet over the last 10 years by NopWorld & E-Consultancy (2004).
Russell has been responsible for growing Thomas Cook’s business via the internet to 26 per cent. He redefined the eCommerce strategy and restructured the team to deliver against this strategy. He led the redesign and relaunch of the Thomas Cook website in December 2007, incorporating an on demand travel video capability, which led to record daily sales throughout the peak season.
Russell, with his team, is currently in the process of launching a new high performance eCommerce platform with a multi-channel capability.
Prior to his current role, Russell held the position of Director of Digital Marketing for MyTravel UK. He joined MyTravel in November 2004 and helped increase online bookings by over 400%. He was instrumental in increasing the percentage of business being distributed via the internet by over 400%.
From October 2002 to November 2004, Russell was Head of eCommerce at Bradford & Bingley Group, responsible for the Group’s eCommerce business and the award-winning online mortgage broker, Charcolonline. Prior to this role, from August 2000 to October 2002, he held the position of Product Development Director for Charcolonline and played a primary role in developing the site to a market-leading position.
Before joining Bradford & Bingley, Russell was Sales Development Manager - Mortgages & Equity Release - for Norwich Union, which he joined in September 1999. He had previously spent six years working in various distribution, product development and sales and marketing roles at ANZ Banking Group in New Zealand.
Born in Dundee, South Africa, in 1972, Russell immigrated to New Zealand when he was 17. He studied Business Studies and Marketing at Massey University, New Zealand. Russell moved to the UK in June 1998 and lives with his wife and three young children in Cambridge.
