Hi,
I'm looking at ways to raise the profile of my hotels website in Europe. We would like to set up some translated webpages, does anyone know if it's best to set up a new wbesite so mywebaddress.de for example or mywebaddress.co.uk/de/
I guess the second option would benefit for all the seo from the current website??

Hi Becky,
I would suggest that mywebaddress.de is much the better option both from an SEO point of view, and to increase consumer confidence in your website which in turn provides a better, more authentic user experience for your German visitors: they will barely know they are on a translated site!
Also, links from your english site to your new domain will complement your SEO efforts.

It was interesting to see your posting, especially since we specialise in tourism, travel and hospitality.
The answer to your question is actually has many different sides. From my experience I would say that you do not necessarily need to choose one or the other. You could choose one if you wanted, but you could also choose both!
Also, another question which you may want to think about is whether you actually want to market yourself as a UK business or as a German business. But if you'd really want to choose between the two domain styles you mentioned I'd go either for both or the .de name.
If your domain name however did not have a .co.uk extension though, other combinations that you could also think about would be:
de.mywebaddress.com
uk.mywebaddress.com

Further to my last message, do not think that the domain will necessarily make all the difference. There are various things to consider and think about depending on how you want to market the business. For example you could even host the website in Germany, and that would make some difference, but it all comes down to the details of what you are trying to achieve. Denis, Good reply to the question really.. Becky, question really is, as you are into hospitality.. which is your biggest target market? usually, having single URLs increases the saturation for the site( SEO perspective) - decreases the cost of promoting - and projects the website as a 'larger' website to the consumer...

I believe you want to promote the London hotel to all of Europe, and Germany was just an example?
Either way, being that your current London site uses the .co.uk subdomain http://london.langhamhotels.co.uk/en/ and the way search engines sometime exclude non-local sites by default, a good start could be having a link to the London branch listed on the main .com site here:

I'd like to understand what brought this decision to have translated websites? Is it based on your actual hotel visitors' origin when they check in, or do you have a way to track where your website visitors are coming from?
I looked at your website, and I can't see that you are using any web analytics tool. Happy to help you further if you'd like to discuss where/how your visitors come from to make sure you show them the relevant content on the site and spend your budget wisely.

Many thanks for all your comments, they have come in very useful.
I think we will go ahead and develop some translated websites with regional URLs .de / .ru ect.
We are using an analytics tool and from this we have picked out the key countries to target. Now it's going to be a long process for the translations!
