Hey,
I'm not sure if you guys have seen the debate about Netflix removing the user profiles section of its site and then having to reinstate it. It turns out that even though many users didn't complete their profiles, they really wanted them on the site.
I'm interested in anybody's thoughts on user profiles and how useful / essential these are in social media sites and online communities. At FreshNetworks we build online communities for clients and profiles and real identities are seen as critical to their success.
Does anybody else have similar experiences, or different ones? In forums or blogs do you think being able to see profile data on people who contribute is important?
I wrote a bit more about the background to this on our blog if you're interested to read it:

It is not enough to be interested in the user profiles, but we should concentrate on their views about the related topics. Everyone thinks differently and it totally depends on him that in which he is interested.
