Would anyone be able to offer any sort of explanation for why our site is yo yoing in Google search rankings?

We have for a long time now featured on page 1 of Google's pages for a particular term, however recently we have seen our rankings change on a daily basis, both up and down the rankings. Its not even minor changes, we have on certain days begun in 4th only to drop to the second page in the afternoon, then the following day we are back on page one but at say 6th.

We have been making changes to the site from an editorial perspective but I wouldn't have thought this would have affected our results in the way that we have seen, especially not so frequently.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

    Thanks

I attended two (free) Google seminars yesterday at http://www.t-f-m.co.uk/page.cfm/link=149 where they explained the formula "Ranking = Maximum pay per click * quality score" in detail. I don't know if you are in London, but if there is any chance for you to go to Earls Court this afternoon, they are running another masterclass at 1.15 (need to be there at least 20 min early, and not be put off by queues as they do let everyone in). You'll also get lots of handouts and £50 worth of Adwords vouchers. Apparently we will be send the PowerPoints as well, which I could pass on, if that helps?

Many thanks for your response, however I am not concerned with the sponsored listings, it is in the natural search listing that we are seeing this movement.

In that case the formula would be "Ranking = quality score" which is something that is Google defined, and can be impacted by many aspects as I am sure you would know anyway (quality of keywords, placement of keywords, "Google" also rewards click throughs, ie link strategies are important,, even number of keywords and possibly including misspellings and synonyms,  ...). Maybe, it is only due to competitor activity after all?
