    Hi,

We have a new cruise travel site with unique content on every page, plus on the left and right columns we have the same content, this is headlines from latest news, latest members, last forum posts etc www.socruise.com

We are not ranking well in google which is starting to get me down. But we are in top positions in yahoo, no 2 for "cruise news" Could this be the main factor we are not ranking?

I am thinking about if we should change the site from a 3 column to a 2 column layout and only have these features on the home page. Please Help

To give a bit of background site has been live from Nov 07 in a wordpress blog format with 3 new articles written per day, and current site up for 10 weeks. We have made one other mistake my hosting the site on the .co.uk but link building the .com also plan to change all the url's structure this week example. There must be over 500 pages of content now.

    Hi T,

I have a look round your site and a few things came to mind. Firstly, there are over 900 pages now indexed by Google, and Yahoo is reporting over 5,000 incoming links, mostly to the homepage, as with most sites.

Closer inspection however suggests that many of the pages have very little unique content and lack unique title and description meta data.

I suggest looking through the Diagnostics > Content Analysis reports in Webmaster Tools which shows all of the pages with duplicate meta data.

    Two such pages are:

    http://www.socruise.com/?p=464

    http://www.socruise.com/?cat=37

Changing the page number at the end of either the url doesn't appear to bring up appreciably different content. Without knowing your target keywords it's hard to be much more specific, but, yes, changing your templates could help.

Also, despite having over five thousand backlinks to your site, most of them are from low PageRank pages (0-1).

This is fairly natural and isn't a bad thing, especially if the pages are relevant, and some, such as articles, may increase in strength with time.

Nevertheless, I'd now suggest focusing your link building on high quality links, as adding a couple more weak ones isn't going to make a significant difference.

Yahoo places more weight on onpage factors, while Google places more weight on a sites backlinks. This may explain the differences in your rankings for the term Cruise News.

For example, the main news page: http://www.socruise.com/cruise-news.aspx has hardly any backlinks, more of which would go a long way towards helping it rank in Google; even weak ones would be a good start.

Finally, unless I'm mistaken the page listed at the end of your post isn't currently live: http://www.socruise.com/08/2008/new-cruise-ship-lauch.aspx

Please let me know if you'd like a more detailed review.

    Thanks,

Not so tough. your main problem with Google will stem from two sites having duplicate content.  Decide which you want and put an appropriate divert from one to the other.  You will then need to re-submit your site via Google webmaster tools.  I am also unsure about your link-building strategy and would welcome an opportunity to discuss these issues with you.

I'm with Anthonys on the need for some higher quality links (that usually means paying for them!). Also a bit more clarity on your top keywords for the home page always helps.

Depending on what you want to do with the .com and .co.uk sites this might help... I had a similar issue with a client where the .com was 'hiding' the .co.uk even though the content was different. The reason was the two sites were both being hosted within the same folder. It was an American site hosting the .co.uk site from the States. We set up hosting for the .co.uk site separately in the UK and the problem was solved. Alternatively if they are mirror sites as GaryC suggests just point one at the other
