Im with Easyspace and they are incompetent. I have sent 6 emails to them over 5 weeks that have gone ignored over a simple DNS issue. they just dont answer emails and I have had enough.
I have enough domains with them pull several grand worth of business from them.
Can someone please recommend a reliable and responsive Registrar. Ideally one who supports things like SPF entries and one who is flexible.
I've used 123reg for a long while and while I would not call Pipex (their owner) either competent or responsive (50p a minute to call them) you do get access to all the DNS settings you should ever need to change.
We tend to host our domains there, but host sites elsewhere and just update the nameserver records to our own private-lable nameserver addresses. This has worked fine for over 4 yesrs and 60+ sites.
Beware: I would not use 123reg for spam filtering -- although cheap and accurate, when there servers go down the support is lousy -- i.e. non existent!
Hope this helps Dave http://www.reversedelta.com Web Development, Search Engine Optimisation, Content Management, e-commerce
I have had fabulous experiences with blackcat networks (www.blackcatnetworks.co.uk) They're really helpful, and reply to their emails within a couple of hours at the most, sometimes minutes. You get a full web interface on your domains so you can set up your A, TXT and MX settings and they're quite cheap, though not as cheap as some.
They're hosting is good too, I rent a dedicated server from them with 256mb ram, and a 1ghz processor for £50 a month, and never had a minutes trouble with it.
I have had no end of problems with them; at one point I had someone leaching my bandwidth and they refused to implement a script on the server that would stop it happening.... AND they were simultaneously charging me for excess bandwidth. I cannot see any difference between that and fraud.
Also their support is lazy, disinterested and surly. They have changed registration details on domain names with no authorisation from customers and have refused point blank to change ownership details even when presented with all relevant documentation.
Oh I forgot to mention, they have only one level of tech support and that's the top level, so whatever your issue they will usually sort you out right away. There's no fighting through 6 layers of monkeys to reach the people who can help like you get in some organisations.
o. 123-reg - cheap and as davidbancroft says you get complete DNS access management through a virtual control panel (VCP). Support by telephone is expensive but the Helpdesk (whilst rudimentary - it's a simple form submission not an issue tracking tool) has been fine to date.
o. NetNames - more expensive but better support
o. DomainMonger - cheap but I've never had to call on their support. They also provide total DNS control/ management o.Fastnet - good and responsive BUT no DNS management/ VCP
We recently transferred to www.Safenames.net who have proved to be very responsive, have a very usable UI to manage your domains (with different levels of access depending on the user) and we had a seemless transition of all our domains to the one area, apart from one .de domain. Obviously Netnames do something similar, but the cost is much higher with them.
I would strongly recommend bringing all your domain management under one umbrella, as while you might find a cheap provider, they are not always reliable, and the time that can be spent chasing them easily eats into the tens of pounds you save on each domain.
Unlike most ISP's we have a man respsonible for Domain name services and hosting. He is called Gary and you can speak to him as he has a direct line. We have also given him the impressive name of "hostmaster".
We are more expensive than most, but then Gary needs to be paid and we have a rather nice datacentre that we own than costs money too.

After researching this topic for weeks... I would suggest that everyone i have spoken to has drawn a blank on this.. even very experienced Sys Admins for big online retailers have told me that "they all suck..." which makes me think that this is just the nature of the market for this type of service...

I'm happy with 123reg. Not sure what else you need? It's never been as critical as hosting, and has never caused issues/downtime.

Do not - and I repeat DO NOT use www.names.co.uk
I have had no end of problems with them; at one point I had someone leaching my bandwidth and they refused to implement a script on the server that would stop it happening.... AND they were simultaneously charging me for excess bandwidth. I cannot see any difference between that and fraud.

Avoid them like the plague.
