I have been working in the new media industry now for a few years and have won numerous international awards for my work and am now looking to branch out and form a company of my own with a few fellow designers.
My main query though is how do we get to pitch for jobs? I mean how do we even get to hear about them??

any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

    Matt.

    Hi Matt,

There are two main ways to find work in this industry:

    1) Figure out how you want to position your company with respect to the competition.

    2) Figure out who your market is and what audience you want to be taking to. This your basic market research. Can be as simple as scouring the yellow pages or chamber of commerce (don't know the K equivalent) if you're operating locally.

    3) Then market and promote your services to your target audience. You can do this in the following ways.

    - Putting the company in the hearts and minds of your audience. Also know as getting in the top of mind. You want to be there in there minds when the client starts to think about hiring someone to do the services that you're offering. This means that you have to put your company name, expertise and contact details in front of your potential clients as often as possible. This implies that you identify the sites, e-zines and magazines where your audience looks for information on the services they want to hire, and make sure to participate actively in these publications.

Stay active in the forums and offer useful advice. Offer to write articles. These are the best way to promote your expertise without spending a cent of marketing dollars (or pounds) When you offer good, objective advice, your potential clients will learn to appreciate your brand over time and when it comes to sending out RFPs, you'll be sure to get one.

    - Also, indentify all the nice directories and galleries that feature great designs and designers and make sure that you get listed in all of these. Try http://www.digitalthread.com/ Doesn't hurt to get listed with the best of them.

    - Stay active in the work referral sites like www.projectspring.com, www.elance.com, www.webprosnow.com, and so on. This are great resources for getting a jump-start on sourcing out potential projects. Go to http://webdesign.about.com/library/weekly/aa011501a.htm for a nice list of sites for finding freelance design work.

    - Read the business and local press, and if you read any articles on mergers, or companies with particular problems or interest in Internet, e-business, or e-commerce activities, then these are ripe opportunies for a follow-up phone call or email message about what services you can offer them.

Hope this helps you out a little. Let me know if I can be of futher assistance.
