Unsure if anyone has any advice. But I am currently looking for a start in the industry (SEM/Affiliate)and want to switch from Offline marketing. Have heard that some companies will train, so have begun to apply. However does anyone know of any courses that may be taken, that would be worthwhile for a beginner to show some real commitment and get a foot in?

    Thanks

    hi, Kevin, how are you?

I did the IDM Certificate in Digital Marketing a while ago &, though I wasn't using it to 'cross over' from offline myself, I think the course would be perfect for that purpose.

The best way to learn is to try these things. There is virtually no barrier to entry in either SEM & Affiliate if you're doing them yourself. The two can go hand-in-hand quite nicely & I don't think any potential employer would see personal experience as a negative.

    Is that any use?

The perfect course for a beginner with dedication and commitment is the PrimeQ University. (It is run by an online advertising network that I work for.)

The next PrimeQ University will start on 12 March and take place in Covent Garden, London. The course is completely free and is an attempt to address the skills shortage in the field.

There is also a free Master Class series of tutorials which begin from the very basics and provide guidance on developing a successful online business. It is compiled by writers with 30 years of experience in the field. who have made tens of millions of pounds through online marketing. Hi Kevin

There is of course our own Fast Track Digital Marketing 2-day course which sounds like what you are after?

We're shortly to be running Diploma and Certificate courses in Digital Marketing which are accredited by Manchester Metropolitan University Business School. In fact, we can even offer a Masters in Digital Marketing.

Thanks Ashley, It really is a little expensive, I am looking at all possible routes into the industry and realise that someone might be willing to take me as a freash starter. I realise that you guys are pretty much the guru's of this stuff and have applied to a couple of role's from your Jobs board! I am trying to use/show my initiative and gain some hands on experience without having to spend to much of my own money. If only my current company would pay.... not likely...

    Thanks again

Definately Daniel, I will have a look into it... I really think SEO, PPC and Affiliate is the future of marketing so don't want to go to far down the wrong route of Direct Marketing.

I understand that it is all about hands on experience and wish I had the money to set up a web site and just start playing around with google adwords etc... trying to get my manager to allow me to start up a little PPC campaign of my own for a project we are currently working on.
Sure the break will come soon...

Once again thanks for the Advice!

Sorry forgot to mention I'm 26 so a late starter. Degree in Business and marketing, and some transferable offline experience, so hopefully that will help?

Do you think firms prefer to take younger people for these start up junior positions?

    Cheers

    Hi Kevin

In that case, I would just do it for real for someone in your spare time. You must know someone who has a website, or wants one, and would take your help for free?

Then you can get a load of free help in various forums (like this, or Webmasterworld for SEO, A4uforum for affiliate marketing etc.) or invest a more modest sum and subscribe to our site to get our most excellent guides to best practice SEO etc... ;)

Then just do it and learn the hard way (but best way).

That's how I started - doing a site for my mother-in-law who is Headteacher of a school back in 1996...
