We have just completed another round of analysis for another of our travel clients and found the conversion from a link on a travel forum converts 3 times higher than a visitor from adwords and twice as high than a visitor from organic search.
I guess it depends on how relevant the target phrases. From your initial post you mentioned a travel social media network, which you are comparing to a Paid Search campaign, much of which i would suggest is highly generic.
Personally without knowing the full extent of your study, it sounds a bit like you could be comparing apples with pears
This 40+ slide presentation was recently delivered by Econsultancy’s Jake Hird and looks at the issues surrounding the integration of social media into wider marketing and business practices. The presentation covers the use of data, 'social CRM' and organisational structures in the context of social media.
Econsultancy's Quarterly Digital Intelligence Briefings, sponsored by Adobe, look at some of the most important trends affecting the marketing landscape. The latest report, published in January 2013, examines some key digital trends for 2013, outlining the challenges and opportunities which organizations are (or should be) paying close attention to.

Does any of your analysis show a similar pattern?
Thanks

Interesting finding but I'd think that this was to be expected to be honest.
I think it's normal for any more-human approach to have a better result compared to a more human-less approach. Wouldn't you say so?

I have to say before we started bringing in the data, my hunch was that conversions from organic and social media posts would be closer.
