I will not cover the points to consider re: why, what and when and why instead just suggest some examples etc.
If you are looking for an 'off the shelf' social networking engine then you could do no harm than looking at:

www.onesite.comBoth are however US based and therefore may not be ideal.
If you are looking for a solution which matches your requirements we have developed several social network sites for a variety of 'niche' clients the majority of which are valuable both as a network and as a business.

Viewmy.tv develop social networks on their brandstation platform and have already written an API to get information from Second Life.
The brandstation platform is a collaboration platform for internal corporate communications or external marketing. We've already produced versions for blue-chip clients and we’re based in London.

Hi there,
I keep a list of around 100 providers of online community and social network software. I'd love to say that my business, FreshNetworks, is clearly the best in every situation, but obviously that's not true.
If you get in touch directly I'm happy to point you to the best provider for your specific needs. e.g. for support communities, we think Lithium have a very strong platform and for free, quick set-up where you don't care about data or customisation, Ning is excellent.
