The Telegraph introduces international paywall

Telegraph Media Group has introduced a metered paywall for non-UK readers.

Two thirds of the news site’s 50m global unique visitors come from outside the UK, according to the brand, which is now looking to monetise that audience.

Readers outside the UK will be able to access up to 20 articles per month before being asked to subscribe.

Users can either pay £1.99 for The Telegraph web and mobile pack, which offers unlimited access to the website and mobile apps, or £9.99 for the full digital offering which in addition includes access to the iPad editions of The Daily Telegraph and Sunday Telegraph.

The publisher has stated it has no plans to introduce a paywall in the UK.

The Independent introduced a similar metered model for readers in the US and Canada last year but is set to rethink the strategy as the impact was more modest than expected (nma.co.uk 11 June 2012).
