The Euro 2004 football championship has had an effect on online transactions in all markets.
UK transactions saw the biggest knock on effect on 24th June when online transactions through TradeDoubler’s network dropped by 12% as football fans flocked to their TV screens to watch England’s quarter-final defeat against Portugal.
Transactions in Sweden, Germany and Spain also dropped slightly on days when the national teams were playing. Interest from Dutch fans appeared to gain momentum as their team progressed through to the semi finals of the tournament with transactions dropping 16% when their side played Portugal on 30th June compared to the same time the week before for their first round draw against Latvia.
Online consumers in France were the least affected by the football. Transactions actually rose on all 3 days of their first round matches although there was a noticeable drop during their quarter final defeat against eventual winners, Greece.
