After smashing its fundraising target and finding a fan in Stephen Fry, twentysix’s Gallery of Mo has raised more than £11,000 for Movember. Its success has seen twentysix topping the leaderboard of creative agencies in the UK, raising the most money for the men’s health charity.
The full-service digital agency (www.twentysixdigital.com) recruited more than 170 artists and designers, who spent the month of November creating more than 500 portraits of moustache-wearers in exchange for donations to help change the face of men's health. Supporters commissioned their very own personalised portraits by visiting www.galleryofmo.co.uk and picking an artist, or asking to have one randomly assigned. The amount they donated to Movember was reflected in the time spent on the portrait.
Guest artists also contributed one-off prizes. A prize draw to become a zombie character in Charlie Adlard’s popular Walking Dead comic book series sold out within days of launching. Creature creator the Felt Mistress donated a moustachioed sculpture called Montgomery Venk.
The Gallery of Mo was featured on Forbes.com, tweeted by Stephen Fry and matched the £5,000 it raised in 2011 within days of its launch.
This year it also won the British Interactive Marketing Association award for self-promotion, with judges highlighting the project’s “great word of mouth”.
It also received Movember’s full backing and endorsement. twentysix impressed organisers with their fundraising efforts in 2011, when the inaugural Gallery of Mo raised £5,000 and won design awards including a coveted Awwwards Site of the Day, and Contagious Magazine’s Movember creative competition.
Support for Movember has been an annual tradition for twentysix since 2008. In 2010, its ‘Mo’s Wanted’ site highlighted the team’s participation in the campaign and encouraged others to get involved. Last year, for the first Gallery of Mo, 29 artists illustrated 189 portraits.
Although Movember has now come to an end, the Gallery of Mo is still accepting portrait commissions. Tickets to win Montgomery Venk are priced at £1 each and can be purchased from www.galleryofmo.co.uk.
twentysix CEO Gail Dudleston said: “I am so proud of the team at twentysix, who ploughed so much time and talent into making the Gallery of Mo a robust success. We were all pleased to get Movember’s official backing, excited when we passed last year’s fundraising total early in the month – but most of all, grateful for the widespread support we received from the UK’s creative community.
“We hope that the money raised by the Gallery of Mo will help to improve men’s health in the UK, and we are already looking forward to beating our own record when Movember 2013 launches.”
