The number of UK broadband connections reached 13.1m at the end of last year, up from 9.8m at the end of 2005, according to the latest figures.
Point Topic's Q4 survey puts the worldwide total of broadband lines at 281.5m, with 17.7m lines added in the three months. The year on year growth rate was 31.1%, with broadband penetration worldwide reaching 5.4%.
The top ten countries by number of broadband lines are:

- Japan
- Germany
- South Korea
- France
- UK
- Italy
- Canada
- Spain
The largest growth rate was in Eastern Europe, with 14.2% growth in the last quarter of 2006. Russia, Poland and Romania added a combined 2.8m new subscribers in the quarter.
The Middle East and Africa region grew its broadband subscriber base by 13.3% in Q4. It now has a total of 6m broadband users, 2.1% of the world total.
Another recent Point Topic broadband survey predicted that broadband penetration in the UK would reach 64% by the end of 2008. Recent eMarketer figures put UK broadband penetration at 47.1%.
