The impressive growth of German-based business network Xing is continuing, with the company announcing that its membership has now passed the 2m mark.

Xing recently recorded massive user growth in its end of year results for 2006, achieving membership growth of 149% last year, from 680,000 to around 1.6m members.

The company was already a market leader in the German speaking world, and continues to grow new members in Germany, Austria and Switzerland at a healthy pace.

The acquisition of Spanish business network eConozco last month also contributed to the growth, adding a further 150,000 members to its network.

CEO and Founder of Xing Lars Hinrichs says the company plans to continue its international expansion strategy:

“We’re continuing to focus on takeovers and partnerships in Europe and the USA, and are confident that we’ll be able to announce further success stories in this respect over the coming months."

Last week LinkedIn, arguably the biggest 'professional network', surpassed the 10m mark. New members are joining LinkedIn at a rate of 130,000 per week, or about 14 new sign ups every minute.
