As more and more companies are asking employees to blog (or considering asking employees to blog) in an official capacity, one of the things that goes unrecognized is the importance of using a blogging platform that is easy to set up and easy to maintain for multiple users.
I manage and host a number of WordPress blogs for clients and when I started providing WordPress installation, customization, hosting and maintenance services, it never occurred to me that managing separate installations would become a burden that eats into my profit margins.
Fortunately, I was able to implement an open-source solution that saves me considerable time, effort and money.
If your company is looking to run more than a few WordPress blogs, I highly recommend that you consider the multi-user version of WordPress, or WordPress MU.
It's the version of WordPress that runs the wordpress.com service that hosts hundreds of thousands of blogs generating tens of millions of hits everyday.
Entities such as the French newspaper Le Monde and the Ivy League university Harvard are WordPress MU users for a simple reason - WordPress MU offers every feature WordPress does but it eliminates most of the hassles of setting up and running multiple installations of WordPress for each additional user.
While I've found that WordPress MU is generally easy to set up and maintain, it's not for everyone. Some technical skill is required and if your company lacks strong tech skills, maintaining and supporting a WordPress MU installation is going to be just as troublesome as trying to run 50 individual installations of the regular WordPress.
But if you've made the commitment to corporate blogging and are ready to go, be sure to consider WordPress MU first if you haven't already.
