According to new research, over 60% of the UK population spends over £5,000 per year on gadgets and new technology.

The survey, released by Best of Stuff, claims that 30% of Brits own up to 15 gadgets, with mobile phones voted as 'top gadget' by 26% of respondents.

Mobile phones also headed the ‘most treasured gadget’ category – 34% claimed they could not live without one, while TV came a close second on 27% of the vote.

Sony’s forthcoming PS3 console was listed as the gadget people were most excited about, with 44% counting down the days until its release in March 2006. Games consoles were also at the top of a third of respondents’ Christmas wish lists.

On the downside, 40% of those surveyed cited battery life as the most annoying thing about their gadgets, with MP3 players, laptops and mobile phones being the worst offenders.

The survey was conducted in advance of the Best of Stuff and What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision exhibition, which will be held at London’s Novotel in Hammersmith from 3-5 November.
