According to a report from research firm DeepField Networks, Amazon's AWS cloud now powers 1% of the internet. If this number is anywhere close to accurate, it's a stunning figure, particularly when one considers that Amazon started as an online retailer of books.
But Amazon's cloud ambitions are huge, and in an effort to grow its cloud even more, Amazon today launched the AWS Marketplace, a one-stop shop for AWS customers to, with a single click, purchase and deploy cloud servers running the software they need.

Amazon recently rolled out in-app purchases for apps in the Amazon Appstore, which, thanks to the rise of the Kindle Fire, is reportedly more lucrative for some developers than the Google Android app store that's part of Google Play.
Now there's good news for developers and heavy-spending app users alike: Amazon is upping the maximum price that can be charged for an in-app purchase.

Based on the search technology that powers search on Amazon.com, CloudSearch, as the name implies, is a cloud-based, fully managed search facility.

Amazon has launched an in-app purchasing API for its Android Appstore that uses its 1-Click payment system.
The API has already been installed on Kindle Fire apps from Disney, The Wall Street Journal and New York Post offering users a fast, convenient method of paying for virtual currency and subscriptions.
Amazon frequently scores highly in consumer surveys and the recent eChannel Retail Benchmark from eDigital found that its checkout process scored joint first with Asda for usability.

According to new research from the Pew Internet & American Life Project, 21% of American adults have read an e-book in the past year. In mid-December, that number stood at 17%.
Chalk that increase up to the rise of affordable e-readers and tablets, like the Kindle Fire and NOOK Tablet, which many Americans received as gifts this past holiday season.

Amazon is looking to boost its ad revenues by attracting FMCG brands as advertisers across both its website and mobile offerings.
Reuters reports that at ad:tech San Francisco Amazon’s VP of global advertising Lisa Utzschneider said that boosting ad sales to FMCGs was a “huge opportunity” for the company.

Google may have plenty of reasons to be proud of its Android operating system, but when it comes to the Android ecosystem, another company may actually be having more success selling Android apps than Google is.
That company is Amazon, which last year launched its own Android app store, dubbed Amazon Appstore.

Compared to the digital doldrums some traditional media companies, such as record labels, have found (and put) themselves in the past years, times look relatively good for book publishers.
At least that's the way it appears if you look at the January 2012 figures published by the Association of American Publishers (AAP), which includes data from over 1,000 book publishers.

A modified version of Google's Android OS powers Amazon's popular Kindle Fire tablet, but being able to take some credit for the Fire's OS apparently isn't enough for the search giant.
Google reportedly believes that it needs a tablet of its own and it could start a fierce battle with Amazon as early as May when it releases an inexpensive 7-inch tablet to take on the Kindle Fire.

Amazon sold 1m daily deals vouchers in 17 hours yesterday through its AmazonLocal offers site, raising questions about the future of its strategic partner Living Social.
The e-tailer sold out of vouchers that offered a $10 Amazon giftcard for $5, presumably clocking up a huge number of new members as a result.
In January last year Living Social sold 1.4m $10-for-$20 Amazon gift cards, so Amazon already knew the tactic would work.
