Email census: only 3% of companies optimise for priority inbox
Econsultancy’s Email Marketing Industry Census, sponsored by Adestra, has for the past five years been assessing how companies and agencies are adapting to meet the challenges and opportunities present in the email marketing channel.
With email being rated very highly as a channel for return on investment (second only to SEO), but the effectiveness of ‘batch and blast’ techniques decreasing, it is important that marketers stay ahead of the game to maintain its effectiveness.
10 top tips for building your email list
A friend of mine asked me recently “how do I get my email lists going?”. He knew he needed to get his message out to more people, but wondered how you go about building up your own lists without buying in any data?
In the recent 2012 Econsultancy Email Census, sponsored by Adestra, when asked, “Which three areas of email marketing do you really need to focus on in 2012?” segmentation came up top, but worryingly list/data quality has moved to fourth place.
We all know it, but data is the key to effective email marketing. Having a good quality, up-to-date email database puts you up front in terms of deliverability and optimising your results. It’s also the basis for delivering relevant communications.
Getting your data collection and your list right from the start can make or break your email marketing plans. Here are 10 tips for building your list size without buying in data.
Valentine’s Day campaigns show email turn-offs
After my Valentine’s Day analysis of online dating sites and what’s so great about their email, I decided to compare their performance around the holiday to a sample of retail marketers to measure the effectiveness of these sorts of big seasonal marketing drives.
Online dating sites aren’t the only ones who use Valentine’s Day to implement a big marketing push.
Retailers selling products like chocolates, flowers and gift cards also stepped up their game (and their email activity) to capitalise on the most romantic day of the year.
Are email and social media complementary channels?
More companies and agencies view email marketing and social media as complementary channels, though the majority view the two as separate activities.
For our Email Marketing Census 2012, produced in association with Adestra, we asked 846 company and supply side respondents about their views on the relationship between email marketing and social media.
While some still believe that social media means the death or decline of email, there is a growing belief that the two channels can work together.
Here are some stats from the survey which look at how brands are using email to drive social media activity, which tactics are working, and what is holding them back.
