Webmaster World forums recently hosted a discussion on whether or not a site’s search engine ranking is affected by the length of time a domain name is registered for.
The theory is that registering a domain name for ten years indicates to Google that the domain’s owners’ have made a long term commitment and therefore the site is less likely to be spam.

Pink technologies for girl gadget lovers are set to be hot-ticket gift items this Christmas, dominating a growing number of consumers' web searches for the colour.
Online marketing tracker Hitwise UK found mobile phones, games machines and handheld consoles were amongst the most searched-for pink products in November, with the pink version of LG's newly colourful range of Chocolate phones leading the pack.

Yahoo has signed a deal with US newspaper groups in which they will share online advertising, content and technology.
In return for Yahoo publishing local classified ads on its network of sites, the newspapers will supply local news content. This deal should boost Yahoo’s local reach while providing local papers with national exposure for their classifieds.

According to a leaked internal memo written last month by senior vice president Brad Garlinghouse, Yahoo is in serious need of major organisational changes.
In the memo, published by the Wall Street Journal, Garlinghouse argues that Yahoo suffers from a lack of consistent leadership, business focus and a 'single cohesive strategy'. A Yahoo spokesman has confirmed the document’s authenticity.

Muhammad Saleem at The Mu Life wrote an article last week claiming that social media is more effective at disseminating news than Google News.
Muhammad’s article, ‘Why Socially Driven News is Better’ used the news of US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld’s resignation as an example of social media beating Google News to a major story.
Interesting argument, but it doesn't stand up...

Michael Arrington at TechCrunch has been hit with a cease and desist order by lawyers acting on behalf on YouTube.
His 'crime' was to post an article advising readers how to download videos from YouTube to an iPod, or a computer’s hard drive. Arrington had checked YouTube’s terms of use before posting this, and found nothing in there to prevent this.
Or so they thought…

The majority of search queries consist of more than word - over the past decade searchers have gradually increased the amount of words per query, from 1.2 in 1998 to 3.3 in 2006.
Partly, this is because there is more noise to cut through on search engines like Google and Yahoo. But it is also about savvier searchers, finessing their query to return the most relevant results.
If you are running paid search marketing campaigns you need to understand how search queries indicate propensity to convert, and customer value.
Figuring this out can make a big difference to your return on investment from PPC campaigns...

Marissa Mayer, Google's vice president for search products and user experience, has revealed an interesting experiment carried out by the search engine a few years ago.
The goal of the experiment was to determine the ideal number of results to display in response to a search query. Google surveyed its users, who decided 30 results on a page would be best, rather than 10 or 20.
