Speaking to journalists in Belgium last week, Bill Gates warned against the rush to new web-based software service, and compared this to the doomed 1990s internet bubble.
Google's deal to pay $1.65 billion in stock for YouTube, an online video company that has yet to turn a profit, has led some commentators to revive talk of an internet bubble.
We've always stopped short of calling it a bubble, for a number of reasons, but certain recent funding rounds are making us reconsider our stance...

This week saw the official launch of Adaptex, the software from Keypoint Technologies that can help users of PDAs enter data and text much faster and easier. Communicating and buying via your PDA or smartphone whilst on the road can be a lot easier potentially.

US startup Zvents, a site that allows users to search for events in their local area, has announced that it has raised $7 million in venture capital.
This has raised eyebrows in E-consultancy Towers, as it is a large sum of money for a site which currently covers only a small geographical area, and has established competitors in the market, such as Eventful.com, Meetup and Upcoming.

A new kind of image search is being launched today by Riya, which will allow users to search for images using both text and images as queries.
Other image searches rely on text queries, which depend on the data attached to the image file. This is not necessarily a reliable way to search, which is where Like.com comes in.
And boy, the technology is stunning...

Last.fm has become one of my very favourite web apps – it helps me find new music and figure out what I've been listening to most (Cocteau Twins, for the record).
I recently hooked up with Martin Stiksel, one of the company's founders, in last.fm's new offices near Old Street in London, to discuss progress to date and to find out more about the service.

Who wants to buy a web app? Ryan Carson has sent us the inside track on DropSend, which is looking for a new home.
The DropSend app was launched about a year ago and allows users to email large files. It stores files on a local server and provides a ‘download’ link for the recipient.
DropSend was built for less than £30,000 over an eight-month period and is profitable, but Ryan is now looking to focus on newer projects.

First-time voters at next week's US mid-term elections are being urged to become election observers for the day by posting video from poll scenes to the web using mobile phones.
With over 500 seats being contested across the country, youth social action movement YouthNoise has partnered with new video sharing website Veeker to solicit "veeks", or "video peeks", via email over MMS from polling stations, rallies, protests and parties.

MojoPages, a new social search venture, has adopted a documentary-style videoblog to build buzz around its forthcoming launch, while engaging users even before a beta website has launched, to help with aspects such as design and usability.
The website, which will rank businesses in line with user ratings, aims to improve on standard directory-style services such as Yellow Pages.
